Glutathione: Firefighter’s New Hope or Risk?
After leading a team into the devastated Eaton Fire, veteran Captain David Marquez took a breath of glutathione on the roadside outside the Rose Bowl. He describes an instant lift: “I felt much better immediately after the worst exposure of my career.”
Glutathione is a naturally‑produced antioxidant that some clinics say helps rid firefighters of smoke‑borne toxins, potentially lowering cancer risk—a serious concern since first‑responders face a 14% higher risk of cancer deaths than the general U.S. population.
But the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) issued a warning last month after two pharmacy recalls revealed contaminated glutathione. The union stresses that there is no large‑scale evidence of safety or efficacy, and some patients reported feeling worse after treatment.
Medical experts, including occupational lung specialist Dr. Coralynn Sack, say that while antioxidative supplements show biological plausibility, the data they have is limited, and no clinical trials have yet been done on firefighters. She calls for better protective gear and rigorous research before adding glutathione to the standard fire‑response medical kit.
Firefighters like Marquez, who has spoken at state capitols about glutathione’s relief, and younger crews who are more health‑conscious, are split between enthusiasm for a quick fix and caution due to the IAFF’s reservations. The debate highlights the broader issue of how firefighter health regulations lag behind the emerging science of smoke‑related illnesses.
