Gold & Secrets: Former CIA Spy Convicted in $200m Scam

David Rush, a former CIA officer, admitted to a sprawling fraud scheme that led to the discovery of nearly 300 gold bars, $2 million in cash and luxury watches in his home. The plea deal requires him to repay the U.S. government, surrender property and vehicles, and could result in up to 20 years in prison.

Authorities uncovered that Rush used a cover of “work‑related expenses” to funnel money into gold and high‑end property purchases in South Florida, all while passing classified information to a foreign official—a move that could have jeopardized national security.

As part of the restitution, Rush has been ordered to turn over $39 million seized from his accounts, 35 watches, two BMWs, and all confiscated gold bars.

The case raises serious questions about the CIA’s vetting process, after it emerged that Rush had previously lied about his military and academic credentials. The final sentencing hearing on 28 January will determine the length of his prison term.
