Google to power Finland’s AI future with a €13bn ($15bn) spend, buying half the output of a nuclear plant and building brand‑new data centres.
The 22‑year contract with utility Fortum secures up to 50% of the Loviisa nuclear plant’s output, ensuring a steady supply of clean energy for AI workloads. Meanwhile, Google plans data hubs in Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala, while doubling down on its existing site in Hamina.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo lauded the move as a testament to Finland’s leadership in responsibly built AI infrastructure. Google’s chief investment officer, Ruth Porat, said the package pairs “technical expansion with new energy capacity, grid upgrades and local power‑affordability initiatives.”
Beyond just chips and servers, the investment is projected to create roughly 37,000 construction jobs and add about €3.6bn to Finland’s GDP annually. Local communities will also benefit from biodiversity, education and workforce‑development funds earmarked in the deal.
