Grindr has agreed to pay £26 million to settle a lawsuit that accused the app of sharing users’ HIV status with third‑party data analytics providers. The claim was filed in the UK in 2024 and served in the US against more than 11,000 users.
The settlement requires two payments of £13 million each – the first to be made by 31 December and the second by 31 March 2027. Grindr said it is not admitting liability but acknowledges that the pre‑2020 data practices caused distress among users.
The data breach involved third parties such as Apptimize and Localytics. Earlier, the app was fined £5.5 million by Norway’s data protection watchdog and reprimanded by the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
Since 2020, Grindr claims it has overhauled its privacy policies to better protect sensitive health information. The company says it remains a safe space for its LGBTQ+ users.
