In brief
The push by Qatari businessman Khalil Al-Mohannadi to lead international table tennis meets controversy, following the detention of a whistleblower at the world championships in Doha.
In a vast, nearly empty venue on the outskirts of Doha, Qatar recently hosted the world table tennis championships. While the sport enjoys massive popularity globally, particularly in East Asia, local interest in Qatar remains low. But behind the scenes, a high-stakes game unfolded as Qatari businessman Khalil Al-Mohannadi aimed to become president of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).This move is part of a broader trend where wealthy Gulf states like Qatar seek to amplify their influence across international sports. Critics are raising alarms about a history of dubious practices, including bribery and excessive spending linked to Qatari authorities in various sports. Adding to the drama, last Monday, Swiss whistleblower Georg Silberschmidt, who had previously clashed with Al-Mohannadi, was detained at the championships. Surrounded by over 20 security guards, he was taken into custody simply for distributing fliers promoting a new players’ union aimed at enhancing athlete rights. As the situation unfolds, concerns about fairness and integrity in the sport continue to mount.
