In brief

President Trump announces a “great deal” with Indonesia, easing trade tensions and tariffs.

President Trump shared exciting news on social media about a newly struck trade agreement with Indonesia, labeling it a “great deal for everybody.” The deal was confirmed by Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto, who highlighted the extensive negotiations that took place. Under the agreement, U.S. goods shipped to Indonesia will enjoy no tariffs, while Indonesian products will incur a 19 percent tariff in the U.S. This announcement is part of the Trump administration's strategy to solidify trade relations with several countries while threatening steep tariffs on exports from countries lagging in negotiations.Officials from both nations have been discussing trade for several months. Interestingly, President Trump had warned Indonesia last week about imposing a dramatic 32 percent tariff if they couldn’t finalize any agreements. Indonesian representatives expressed surprise at the threat amidst the constructive discussions.“I think it’s a good deal for both parties,” Trump commented, mentioning that a similar agreement with India is anticipated soon. The president also noted that Indonesia has valuable resources such as high-quality copper, which the United States plans to utilize.
