Harvey Weinstein Gets 15‑Year Sentence
Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was handed a 15‑year prison term after a jury found him guilty of a criminal sexual act against former assistant Miriam Haley.
In the victim‑impact statement, Haley spoke of the "devastating effect" the assault had on her life and sense of security, saying it may never fully recover.
Weinstein, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, denied the allegations but apologized to "anyone I may have hurt by my actions."
This is the second time he has been given a prison sentence in the Haley case. In 2020 he was convicted and sentenced, but New York's highest court overturned that conviction in 2024 after ruling the trial was unfair. He was retried and convicted again last year.
The sentence also follows a 2022 conviction in California for raping and sexually assaulting an actress in a hotel room in 2013, a case that now awaits new sentencing following appeals.
Judge Curtis Farber, who announced the 15‑year sentence, called Weinstein "a man who took what he wanted by force and never accepted responsibility."
Weinstein’s case is part of the larger #MeToo movement, sparked by earlier allegations that unmasked a culture of sexual abuse in Hollywood. The convictions underscore the legal system’s efforts to hold powerful figures accountable for misconduct.
