In brief

This past Wednesday, a blinding fireball known as a bolide illuminated the pre-dawn skies in Mexico City. Videos rolled out across the internet as the brilliant display captivated locals and netizens alike. Experts from the American Meteor Society explained that a bolide is a fireball that ignites with a bright flash, often fracturing as it travels through the atmosphere.

While meteors are common, bolides are relatively rare spectacles. A researcher from the UNAM Institute of Geophysics estimated that an object at least a meter in diameter enters Earth's atmosphere approximately every 2.5 days, though most remain unnoticed, falling into the ocean or deserted lands. Denton Ebel, curator of meteorites at the American Museum of Natural History, echoed the excitement surrounding the event. As the bolide roared through the sky, it was accompanied by a sonic boom suggesting that fragments may have hit the ground. The display served as a reminder of the bigger cosmic spectacle taking place above and reassured onlookers that such events pose no real danger. Meteors originate from fast-moving space rocks and can create dazzling fireballs in our atmosphere. For Mexico City’s over 22 million residents, seeing a spectacular bolide provided a noteworthy morning spectacle and a moment to appreciate the wonders of space!
