Italy’s heat alert is on fire—25 of its biggest cities, from Rome and Milan to Venice and Naples, have entered the highest “red” warning. Authorities warn residents not to walk outside between 11:00 and 18:00, to stay indoors and drink up.
Temperatures have hit the mid‑30s centigrade (around 90‑95°F) across the country. The heat is due to a powerful subtropical anticyclone over the Mediterranean, a climate‑change‑boosted weather pattern that’s also flaming wildfires across Europe.
While firefighters tackle blazes in Greece, France, Portugal and Spain—burning thousands of hectares—Europe’s land is heating up twice as fast as the global average. This means hotter summers, higher pressure on water supplies, and riskier conditions for everyone, even healthy locals.
