On Friday, a 16‑year‑old named Griffin J John II broke into Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon with a shotgun that had over 44 rounds. He shot at students and staff, killing three children and one teacher.

A brave teacher, Meghan Lambert, 25, was the first to react. She tackled the gunman, tried to wrestle the weapon from his hands, and threw her phone in the chaos—her actions helped stop the shooter from killing more people.

Just a few blocks away, a 36‑year‑old dad, Kaylub Giamanco, was heading home when he saw the shooter on a nearby car. He grabbed his concealed pistol and rushed into the school to confront the teen. Police say Giamanco fired multiple shots that killed the attacker, preventing further tragedy.

Nine people were injured or dead: three children (ages 5, 8, and 11), one teacher (Meghan Lambert), one older student (7), another teacher (54), and two more students who are being treated. Authorities are still working out how the teen got the shotgun.

Officials praise the teacher and the dad for their quick thinking. The governor, governor Tina Kotek, called them heroes but also reminded them they carry a heavy emotional burden.

The community is grieving. Memorials have been set up outside the school, and the city is looking into new safety measures. The event shows how quick action by everyday people can make a huge difference even in scary times.
