In brief
After a century of mysteries, a juvenile colossal squid was filmed in its natural habitat off the South Sandwich Islands. Experts are buzzing with excitement as this elusive creature finally graces the deep sea with its presence!
In an exciting discovery, a team from the Schmidt Ocean Institute recorded the juvenile colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, while exploring the South Sandwich Islands in March. Despite using a new camera system designed to find this elusive giant, researcher Dr. Kathrin S.R. Bolstad and her crew couldn't locate one during their trip. However, a fortunate dive team unexpectedly documented footage of a young squid measuring around 30 centimeters (just shy of a foot). Dr. Bolstad, a cephalopod biologist at Auckland University of Technology, reviewed the footage and confirmed it was indeed a colossal squid. It's been a whopping 100 years since this species was first described, and this sighting adds to the understanding of an animal that can grow up to 23 feet long in adulthood! The colossal squid, a fascinating creature of the deep, remains one of the ocean's best-kept secrets, yet this footage shines a light on its previously hidden life underwater.
