While refurbishing the historic Corsewall Lighthouse in Scotland, mechanical engineers made a fascinating discovery—a 132-year-old message in a bottle! The lighthouse, which has been guiding sailors since the late 1800s, unveiled its hidden secret when engineer Ross Russell noticed an intriguing glass bottle tucked away in a wall cavity.
Curious and excited, the team fished out the bottle, which was sealed with an old rusted wire on a cork. After careful extraction, they unearthed a handwritten note. The date at the top read September 4, 1892, and the note listed the names of the lighthouse keepers of that era: John Wilson, John B. Henderson, and John Lockhart.
Barry Miller, the current lighthouse keeper, couldn’t contain his excitement when he was called over to witness the find. “I was shaking! It felt surreal,” he said, jokingly adding that they swore to keep quiet if the note turned out to be a treasure map.
This remarkable discovery not only highlights the lighthouse’s rich history but also connects modern engineers with the past, symbolizing the timeless nature of maritime guardianship.
