In brief
In the recent presidential election, Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front party defeated incumbent candidate Álvaro Delgado, marking a significant change in Uruguay's political landscape.
Uruguay has chosen a new leader! In a vibrant runoff election, former mayor Yamandú Orsi triumphed over Álvaro Delgado, the candidate from the ruling National Party. As the votes were still being counted, Delgado gracefully conceded, wishing Orsi success in his new role. With 784,523 votes, Orsi led Delgado, who garnered 771,434 votes. This victory represents a comeback for Orsi's center-left party, the Broad Front, which had previously governed Uruguay before a short stint of conservative leadership. Orsi's win could usher in changes, echoing the Broad Front's past policies that included progressive reforms like same-sex marriage and the legalization of marijuana. Current President Luis Lacalle Pou acknowledged the transition and expressed readiness to assist Orsi in the handover process. As Uruguay moves forward, many are excited to see what the future holds under this new leadership.
