In brief
Thailand has officially legalized same-sex marriage, marking a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ rights in the country. As the law came into effect, many couples celebrated by registering their unions in grand locations like Bangkok's shopping malls. Police officer Pisit "Kew" Sirihirunchai and his partner Chanatip "Jane" Sirihirunchai are among the eager couples ready to tie the knot after years of anticipation.
This new law grants same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual ones, including asset management, inheritance, and adoption rights. Couples can now also make critical medical decisions for their partners if necessary. While many younger couples feel more at ease coming out, activists stress that this achievement is the culmination of nearly two decades of advocacy, culminating in overwhelming parliamentary support for the marriage equality legislation.Despite the win, challenges remain, as some laws still define parenthood in traditional gender terms, and broader LGBTQ+ rights need further advocacy. Yet, many couples, including those like Rungtiwa Thangkanopast and Phanlavee, feel a sense of legitimacy and acceptance that the new law brings. As Thailand joins the ranks of nations recognizing same-sex marriage, it sets a promising precedent for the region.
