LOS ANGELES (AP) — Federal immigration agents arrested a U.S. citizen during a raid and drove off in his car with a child still inside. Advocates voiced their concerns, highlighting a potential failure in child safety protocols during such operations.
Footage showed masked agents apprehending a man in a parking lot while his one-year-old daughter was strapped into her car seat. After he was taken away, agents entered the vehicle and drove off with the child still inside.
According to Lindsay Toczylowski of the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, action should have been taken to ensure the child's safety during the operation. The child was later retrieved by family members from federal offices.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated the man was arrested for allegedly assaulting Border Patrol agents during the raid, while five undocumented immigrants were also apprehended.
The whereabouts of the man have not been disclosed. His mother described the situation as traumatic and said they were contacted to pick up the girl later that day. The child reportedly asked for her father, further highlighting the emotional impact of the incident on the family.
