POINTE-AU-CHIEN, La. — The Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe is on the front lines of climate change and coastal erosion, fighting to protect their ancestral lands in Louisiana. The once thriving landscape has been transformed into a vulnerable area due to rising saltwater levels and the effects of severe storms.

With the ongoing battle against erosion, the tribe is actively constructing reef barriers from recycled oyster shells and reinforcing their homes to ensure safety against hurricanes. These efforts are vital for preserving not just the physical land but also their cultural heritage.

“We want to build a future where our children and grandchildren can stay connected to this land, our ancestors’ land,” said Cherie Matherne, the tribe's operations director. They are committed to making it possible for the next generations to thrive in their community.

This proactive approach is a testament to the tribe's resilience. Working with local organizations, they hope to inspire young families to return and help restore what has been lost.
