US acting legend Robert Redford has passed away at the age of 89.

In a statement, his publicist Cindi Berger shared that Redford died at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, surrounded by loved ones. 'He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.'

Redford was celebrated for iconic roles in films like 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' and 'The Sting', and founded the Sundance Film Festival which played a crucial role in boosting independent filmmaking. The Oscar-winning star also directed the acclaimed film 'Ordinary People' and announced his retirement from acting in 2018, saying he felt 'tired of acting.'

He is survived by his wife Sibylle and two daughters. Redford's legacy in film and culture will be enduring, leaving fans and filmmakers alike with cherished memories of his contributions.
