Istanbul Faces Worst Rainfall in 84 Years

Two people lost their lives as heavy rains hit Istanbul – the most intense rainfall in 84 years, according to the governor.

A 14‑year‑old boy was electrocuted stepping into a puddle, while a 34‑year‑old man hit his head and died after slipping on slick roads.

Nearly 600 residents were rescued, and cars were found submerged in basements and parking lots. The deputy mayor says hundreds more are still trapped.

Gov. Davut Gül urges citizens to stay home unless essential, and schools have been closed for two days.

Traffic and a river burst its banks, affecting 46 flights and causing road collapse in several districts. More than 8,000 workers are on the ground responding.

Emergency leave is granted for vulnerable workers and mothers of under‑8 children.
