Jackie, a charismatic bald eagle who became the face of a viral online nest cam, died Monday after weeks of intensive veterinary care in Ojai, California.
The bird had been admitted to the Ojai Raptor Center after being attacked by other eagles. Medical history revealed underlying health issues — mainly anemia and significant weight loss — that complicated her recovery efforts.
"Despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists, her condition continued to deteriorate," the center stated. "We are working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to provide comprehensive follow‑up information."
Jackie's fame stemmed from a livestreamed nest in Big Bear Valley, which has amassed hundreds of thousands of subscribers and supporters worldwide. Since hatching in spring 2012, the bird and her partner, Shadow, who became mates in 2018, were frequent subjects of the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam managed by the Friends of Big Bear Valley nonprofit.
