In brief
With heightened anxieties surrounding U.S. foreign policy, many American travelers are worried about how they'll be received abroad, especially in Europe and neighboring countries.
As U.S. foreign policy undergoes significant shifts, American travelers are increasingly anxious about their reception in countries like Germany, France, Canada, and Mexico. Many are wondering, “Will they hate us?” This was evident when Franck Verhaeghe and his friends decided to speak French during their planned trip to Mexico City, with Verhaeghe admitting that while he doesn’t feel unsafe, he believes locals may not be “very happy” with Americans.Under President Trump's new policies, alliances are reportedly at risk, leading to boycotts in Canada and protests in Turkey and Panama. As a result, some American travelers are contemplating changes to their travel plans. The risk management firm Global Rescue noted that 72% of experienced U.S. travelers feel Americans will be less welcome this year. While cancellations haven't surged, discussions on social media reflect trepidation. Christine Bauer, a retiree from New Hampshire, expressed worries about the French response to U.S. political dynamics, particularly after recent comments by Trump and Elon Musk regarding NATO and allied nations. Despite her concerns, she and her husband are currently still planning their trip to France, hoping travel remains safe.
