Why this letter matters: Judge Rajani Ranga wrote directly to a 10‑year‑old victim (she was 7 when abused) in Delhi. In the letter she called her “the bravest little girl” and assured her the man who hurt her will stay in a cage for the rest of his life.
The court gave the abuser a life sentence and paid the child a compensation of 1.05 million rupees (about $10,941). The judge also promised the child that she can ignore the trauma, go to school, make friends, laugh, and dream.
When the letter was shared online, it sparked a wave of praise. Social media users called it a “rare” and “ray of hope” moment, and highlighted how often abusers are known to the victim.
Yet this story is not unique. In 2024, India logged more than 69,000 cases of child sexual abuse reported to the Protector of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) courts. Most cases involve trusted adults and are rarely reported.
Judge Ranga’s letter is a rare example of a judge speaking personally to a vulnerable child, showing that the law can be compassionate while still holding abusers accountable.
