RALEIGH, N.C. — The former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema is currently facing a lawsuit regarding her romantic involvement with Matthew Ammel, a member of her security detail. The suit was filed by his ex-wife, Heather Ammel, who claims Sinema interfered in their marriage, leading to its breakdown.
The lawsuit seeks damages under North Carolina's alienation of affection laws, which allow jilted spouses to pursue legal action against third parties seen as responsible for marital collapse.
In documents submitted to the court, Sinema acknowledged that her relationship with Ammel became romantic in May 2024, following the Ammels' separation that November. Heather Ammel argues that Sinema's actions disrupted a once-strong marriage.
Sinema's attorney has defended her position, asserting that her actions did not significantly impact the marriage and that the relationship only blossomed once the Ammels had already separated. They maintain that a single message sent to Ammel cannot be considered valid evidence of alienation of affection.
This case has garnered public interest and raises questions about privacy and the effects of personal relationships in the political realm. Sinema, who recently switched her affiliation to independent politics and no longer seeks re-election, continues her career as part of a Washington legal and lobbying firm.
