In brief

Australia is closely monitoring a group of Chinese naval vessels operating in its exclusive economic zone, marking an unusual development.

As Chinese naval ships are spotted sailing in Australia’s exclusive economic zone, alarm bells are ringing in Canberra and Wellington. The deployment includes a cruiser, a frigate, and a supply vessel, and these ships have ventured unusually far south in the Tasman Sea, raising eyebrows among defense officials. Australian military authorities have been keeping tabs on the vessels since they were detected off the northeastern coast. Just about 150 nautical miles from Sydney, their presence has caught significant media attention, initially reported by The Financial Times. Despite China’s military not providing any commentary regarding their mission, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles states that the warships are operating within international law. However, he acknowledges the situation as "not unprecedented" but "unusual," ensuring that the military maintains a vigilant watch over their movements from both sea and air platforms. This isn’t the first time Chinese warships have docked in Sydney; previous engagements occurred in 2019, deemed "reciprocal visits" after Australian naval vessels visited Chinese ports. Yet this time, Australian officials admit they have no insight into the eventual destination or intent of the Chinese fleet.
