Sitting in a dim room at a refugee camp in Ivory Coast, Yameogo Aminata, 57, is haunted by memories of the murder of her four sons by jihadists in her home country, Burkina Faso. In 2022, she was away from her home when armed insurgents struck, taking over her village, stealing cattle, and killing many residents, including her sons aged between 25 and 32. They slit the throats of four of my children, she recalls, overwhelmed with emotion. Aminata attempted to fight back but was captured, beaten, and left for dead. Following her son’s murder, she fled to Nioronigué camp in 2023. Her story reflects the anguish and survival against overwhelming odds in a region plagued by violence. The Sahel has seen over 10,000 lives lost to the insurgency as violence expands across borders, urging the United Nations to label it the epicentre of global jihadist violence. As of now, more than three million people have been displaced by conflicts in the Sahel, highlights the dire humanitarian crisis.
