In brief

The European Union is providing emergency funding for Radio Free Europe after Trump administration cuts threaten its operations.

The European Union (EU) has announced a rescue package for Radio Free Europe (RFE) in light of recent funding cuts instituted by the Trump administration. This emergency financing, amounting to 5.5 million euros (approximately $6.2 million), seeks to sustain the broadcasting outlet amid significant financial struggles. Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat, emphasized the vital role of independent journalism, particularly as misinformation spreads rapidly in today’s digital landscape. However, she noted that this funding is temporary and does not cover the entirety of RFE's financial deficit. Since January, President Trump has directed the dismantling of RFE’s parent organization, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which previously provided $12 million monthly to support its endeavors. A U.S. District Court initially intervened to halt these cuts, but a subsequent ruling allowed the administration to continue withholding funds. Stephen Capus, RFE's president, expressed gratitude for the EU's help but recognized that the future of their operations hinges on securing the congressional funds they are legally owed. Currently broadcasting in 23 countries, including major nations like Russia and Iran, Radio Free Europe has a long history of reporting on critical issues such as human rights and corruption, often in regions with authoritarian regimes. Their fight continues in court, with urgent measures being taken to secure operational funds and keep independent journalism alive.
