Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married his partner Jodie Haydon, becoming the country's first leader to tie the knot while in office. The pair married in the capital, Canberra, on Saturday afternoon - the day after the final sitting of the parliamentary year. We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends, Albanese said in a brief statement. The couple became engaged on Valentine's Day last year. Their proposal and the wedding reception both took place at The Lodge, the prime minister's official residence.
In attendance were Haydon's parents and Albanese's son Nathan from his previous marriage, with their dog Toto acting as the ring bearer. The couple walked back down the aisle to the tune of Stevie Wonder's Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) and shared a joyful video of the celebration on social media.
The ceremony unexpectedly had to remain a secret until the wedding day due to security concerns. A festive reception included custom-made beer cans featuring their engagement image, while their first dance as a married couple was to Frank Sinatra’s The Way You Look Tonight. After the ceremony, Albanese and Haydon are set to take a short honeymoon in Australia, marking a new chapter in both their personal and public lives. The couple's love story began at a business dinner in Melbourne in 2020, and they have been seen together at major events, including the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
