In brief

The order threatens to leave thousands of Afghans, who supported U.S. missions during two decades of conflict, vulnerable to Taliban reprisals.

President Trump signed an executive order on January 20, effectively suspending refugee admissions into the United States. This has sparked significant backlash, especially among advocates for Afghan refugees. Shawn VanDiver, the head of AfghanEvac, a coalition aiding Afghan resettlement, stated the suspension endangers thousands of Afghan allies who worked closely with U.S. troops during the war.He described the move as “another broken promise” by the U.S., highlighting the precarious position many Afghans find themselves in. The order will take effect next week but does not indicate when the suspension will lift, saying it will last “until such time as the further entry into the United States of refugees aligns with the interests of the United States.” Traditionally, refugee programs have been a source of pride for the U.S., showcasing its commitment to human rights. Conversely, following the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan last year, the Biden administration actively supported the resettlement of over 76,000 Afghans through Operation Allies Welcome. This recent executive order now jeopardizes that progress, leaving countless families in fear for their safety.
