A senior police officer, Shadrack Sibiya, has been charged with sexual grooming, rape and trafficking allegations after a brief court appearance. The case comes as the police service is scrutinised by the Madlanga Commission over corruption and alleged bribery involving high‑ranking officials. Sibiya, already suspended, will return to court for a bail application on 29 September. The state has requested a change in his temporary confinement due to escape concerns. In a surprise court appearance, the Deputy Police Commissioner, 59, has faced allegations of sexual grooming and abuse.

The accusations say he groomed a 16‑year‑old girl, raped an 18‑year‑old woman and is linked to a trafficking case that could bring more people into arrest.

He has remained silent, and is scheduled to appear again on 29 September for a bail request. Prosecutors are expected to oppose bail.

At the same time, the police service is under review by the Madlanga Commission, which looks into bribery and corruption, including reports that Sibiya received illicit gifts from alleged criminal figures.
