In brief

Exploring new hobbies can be challenging, but the rewards of community and skill-building await.

Learning something new can feel daunting, but it's also a doorway to new experiences. Recently, I joined a friend at a Brooklyn restaurant for a mahjong class, intrigued by the game's colorful tiles and social aspect. Our group of 15 novices gathered, and though the game was complex—filled with suit tiles, honor tiles, and specific rules—I was determined to grasp it. However, as I stumbled through the steps, doubts crept in. Could I really fit another game into my life? Was it worth the struggle? Yet, shortly after our class, my friend surprised me by saying she bought a mahjong set, sparking a new perspective: this could be an opportunity for community and something joyful. Instead of feeling burdened by my struggle, I realized that sharing this beginner's journey could create connections, reshape our leisure time, and perhaps cultivate a new tradition, much like that of my mother's weekly game nights. Embracing the messiness of learning is not only okay; it can lead to enriching friendships and shared laughter. So let's keep those old mainframes running—who knows what fun awaits!
