In a groundbreaking move, Grammy-winning artist Ciara has officially become a citizen of Benin, thanks to a new law that allows descendants of slaves to reclaim their heritage. The singer expressed her gratitude on Instagram, saying she was "honored" and thanked Benin for their warm welcome.
This citizenship initiative aims to strengthen connections with the African diaspora and promote cultural tourism in the West African nation. The ceremony took place in Cotonou, where the government noted the gesture was a significant return to one’s roots, reflecting a deep historical bond.
Last year, Benin enacted the My Afro Origins Law, joining others like Ghana in granting citizenship to the descendants of those forcibly taken during the transatlantic slave trade. Interested individuals can apply through a dedicated website.
Additionally, Benin recently appointed famed director Spike Lee and his wife as ambassadors to strengthen ties with African-Americans in the United States. Benin’s coastline was once known as the Slave Coast, with over a million Africans exported during the era of slavery from the Kingdom of Whydah.
