In brief

Following a weekend cease-fire, India and Pakistan show signs of returning to normalcy. Stocks rise, flights resume, and hope fills the air as both nations begin healing from recent clashes.

As the sun rose over South Asia on Monday, a sense of normalcy began to fill the air in both India and Pakistan. Recent clashes had raised fears, but the announcement of a cease-fire over the weekend sparked hope for peace that might extend beyond just a few days. Stock markets in both countries saw a significant surge. In Pakistan, the Karachi 100 index skyrocketed nearly 9%, peaking so quickly that trading was temporarily halted. Meanwhile, India’s market rebound wiped away losses from the previous week, indicating a growing optimism among investors.India reinstated civilian flights at over 30 airports in its northern region, while Pakistan confirmed that all its airports were back in business, highlighting a return to regular life for millions. However, tensions remain high, with many people still displaced from their homes due to the fights that had embroiled both nations last week. The recent conflict was ignited by a tragic terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, claimed to have links to Pakistan, a claim Islamabad denies. Following retaliatory airstrikes, the situation escalated dramatically, involving heavy drone use and artillery shelling that caused civilian casualties.Thankfully, U.S. mediation led to Saturday’s cease-fire agreement, staving off further violence as military leaders from both sides regrouped on Monday. With cautious optimism in the air, could this cease-fire pave the way for lasting peace?
