Finland's representative at the Miss Universe pageant, Sarah Dzafce, stirred controversy shortly after a photo of her pulling the corners of her eyes went viral. Accompanied by the caption 'eating with a Chinese,' many perceived her gesture as disrespectful to East Asians, leading to widespread backlash across notable countries like Japan, South Korea, and China.

In the wake of the uproar, Dzafce has been stripped of her Miss Finland title, with Finland's Prime Minister condemning the actions as 'thoughtless.' Dzafce contended that her gesture was merely a response to a headache, claiming the caption was added without her knowledge.

Despite her efforts to apologize, labelling the fallout as unintended and emphasizing the importance of respect, critics have called her apology insincere, especially since it was initially made in Finnish.

The situation escalated when Finnish right-wing MPs supported Dzafce by mimicking her pose, further igniting backlash before they had to delete their posts. Finnair, Finland's flag carrier, faced calls for a boycott, stressing that such statements do not reflect their values. As the incident gains international attention, discussions on racism and accountability continue, with petitions for investigations into anti-Asian discrimination garnering thousands of signatures. The Miss Finland Organization ultimately stated that they had no choice but to part ways with Dzafce, affirming their commitment to promoting diversity and equality.
