In brief

Ice loss is inevitable, but there's still a chance to save some of it!

Glacier news isn’t shining bright! According to a fresh study released this week, the world's glaciers—those beautiful, icy expanses we all love—are set to dramatically lose their mass over the next few centuries. Researchers found that, even if global temperatures were to freeze right now (which is highly unlikely), glaciers not locked in ice sheets would still diminish by around one-third. Don't panic yet! There’s still hope. By keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels (about 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), we could save twice as much ice compared to letting temperatures rise to 2.7 degrees Celsius, a current possible trajectory for 2100. “Every little bit counts!” says Lilian Schuster, a glacial expert involved in the study published in the journal Science. While the massive ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland steal the climate spotlight, mountain glaciers play a significant role too! Though they make up less than half of 1% of all global ice, if they melt it could add a foot to sea levels, impacting coastal cities around the world. The fight against climate change is on, and every tenth of a degree matters!
