In brief
Following talks in Saudi Arabia, the U.S. has decided to resume military assistance to Ukraine and initiate discussions for a cease-fire with Russia. This agreement emphasizes humanitarian efforts and the development of Ukraine’s mineral resources.
In a significant development, the U.S. has announced it will resume military aid to Ukraine after productive discussions held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This decision comes alongside Ukraine's support for a proposed 30-day cease-fire with Russia. During the meetings, both U.S. and Ukrainian officials emphasized that any cease-fire terms would require Russia's approval. They also committed to negotiating a deal aimed at accelerating the development of Ukraine’s vital mineral resources. In addition, plans for humanitarian efforts were discussed, which would be activated once a cease-fire takes effect, along with arrangements for the exchange of prisoners of war. Notably, no representatives from Russia attended the negotiations. President Trump mentioned he might soon connect with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing hopes for a long-lasting cease-fire to be finalized shortly. What's on the horizon? Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted that the agreement now puts pressure on Russia to take steps toward peace, stating, “The ball is now in their court.” Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron convened military leaders from over 30 nations to deliberate on the formation of a multinational peacekeeping force to oversee the cease-fire in Ukraine.
