In brief

Home to 10,000 troops and essential for U.S. Central Command, Al Udeid has played a pivotal role in various military operations since 2001, showcasing the enduring U.S.-Qatar partnership.

On June 23, 2025, Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the principal U.S. military base in the Middle East, was targeted by missiles from Iran, emphasizing its critical role in regional operations. With around 10,000 troops stationed there, the base functions as the U.S. Central Command's regional headquarters. Established shortly after the September 11 attacks, Al Udeid has been a key player in missions across Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, including the fight against ISIS.

The military installation, fortified with extensive air defense systems, has evolved into a strategic air operations hub, assisting in the evacuation of thousands during the Afghanistan exit in 2021. Qatar has invested over $8 billion in developing the base, which is also utilized by the British Royal Air Force to strengthen defense ties with the U.S. The complex includes command facilities for special forces and plays a crucial role in projecting air power across a vast region from Africa to Asia.

Until 2013, the exact location of Al Udeid was classified. Recent visits by political leaders, including President Trump, have underscored its significance, where discussions around military cooperation and equipment purchases have taken place. The incidents at Al Udeid highlight the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region and the base's importance as a U.S. military stronghold.
