Hundreds of flights have been grounded across Germany due to an unexpected nationwide strike by airport workers, causing chaos for travelers. The work stoppage, initiated by the trade union Verdi at Hamburg Airport on Sunday, quickly spread to major hubs including Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. With many passengers urged to stay away, operations have faced severe disruptions.
Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, announced that boarding flights would be almost impossible and transfers severely impacted, while Lufthansa reported significant delays and cancellations. Passengers were left scrambling, especially with luggage check-ins already completed.
Verdi is pushing for an 8% pay increase or a minimum €350 monthly raise for airport personnel, alongside better bonuses and additional time off. While some expressed their frustration towards the sudden strike, Verdi emphasized that disruption is key to negotiating improved offers from employers.
Adding to the tension, waste collection strikes in cities like Berlin and Essen have left bins unemptied, further spotlighting the union's demands. With additional strikes expected throughout the week and further negotiations set for Friday, the industrial action shows no signs of slowing down.
