In brief

As testimonies from former detainees emerge, evidence mounts of systematic repression aimed at erasing Ukrainian identity.

Ukrainians in the territories occupied by Russia are facing grim realities, with reports of torture, forced re-education, and other brutal tactics aiming to eliminate their national identity. A recent investigation highlighted the experiences of individuals like Yevheny, a lawyer who endured a violent interrogation after being taken captive by Russian soldiers in his hometown. This small-scale account reflects a broader, chilling strategy employed by Moscow. Spanning an area of approximately 40,000 square miles, similar in size to Ohio, Russian forces have allegedly instituted a governance style reminiscent of the Soviet era. Under this system, over 100 detention facilities and informal camps operate where abuses are rampant, typically hidden from the global community due to restricted access for journalists. Despite the challenges of obtaining information, various human rights organizations and Ukrainian officials have been able to gather testimonies revealing a coordinated effort by Russia to suppress Ukrainian culture and identity. This includes not only torture but also propaganda efforts, forced assimilation, and even the relocation of children to Russia.
