In brief

As emotions run high, young Iranians grapple with the implications of foreign intervention versus the harsh realities of their own oppressive government.

Last Friday, Israeli forces unleashed significant air strikes on Iran, prompting Tehran’s retaliation. In a bold message, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Iranian populace, claiming their aim transcended the threat of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, expressing a desire to pave the way for their freedom. However, opinions within Iran’s fractured opposition vary wildly; some support the strikes, while others harbor skepticism about Israel's intentions.Due to strict censorship and a crackdown on dissent, interactions with residents in Iran have become increasingly challenging. We managed to connect with several young Iranians who oppose the regime, speaking under anonymity for their safety. Tara, 26, vented frustrations about the government's countermeasures to minimize casualties, stating that during evacuations, authorities impede internet access to mask rising death tolls. “I find it absurd to preach about unity while the regime has been slowly killing us for decades. The real enemy is the Islamic Republic!” she argued. Meanwhile, Sima, 27, expressed a more fatalistic view. “I just wish Israel finishes what it started. It’s a wishful thought, I know, but it feels like it may be the only hope for ridding us of this oppressive regime,” she lamented. There are those among them who fully support the Israeli operations, like Amir, 23, who stated, “No one else is willing to tackle this regime. We’ve tried, and they’ve killed us." His sentiments echo the devastation felt after protests erupted following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, a victim of police brutality in 2022, which cost the lives of protesters. However, not everyone is on board. Activist Navid, 25, articulated a shared concern: “This conflict may destroy the very fabric of our nation. How can we expect to overthrow the regime when it could lead to mass devastation?” Darya, 26, mirrored these fears, asserting that the silence surrounding Netanyahu's call for action is telling. Others, like Arezou, 22, are torn, opposing both their regime and Israeli tactics—finding themselves choosing between two evils. “I wish for peace, not more destruction. Innocent lives shouldn’t be collateral damage in this fight,” she stated. Mina, 27, encapsulated this sentiment, stating, “We deserve a peaceful resolution, not more violence."With numerous perspectives emerging, the predicament these young Iranians face highlights a deep and complex struggle between hope for freedom and the pain of violence perpetuated from both the regime and external forces.
