Malcolm-Jamal Warner, an actor best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54. Warner tragically drowned while on vacation in Costa Rica over the weekend, local authorities reported.

He was reportedly caught in a strong ocean current while swimming at Playa Grande around 2 PM local time on Sunday. Although bystanders managed to rescue him and bring him to shore, emergency responders declared him dead at the scene. Warner leaves behind his wife and daughter.

From 1984 to 1992, he charmed audiences with his portrayal of Theo, the son of Bill Cosby's character on the iconic sitcom. The show, which focused on a middle-class African American family, redefined representation on television. Warner was handpicked for this role during a nationwide audition, a moment he fondly recalled in a 2023 interview.

Following his time on The Cosby Show, he starred in several other television series, including Malcolm & Eddie, with comedian Eddie Griffin, who expressed his sorrow on social media, referring to Warner as "My big little brother." Warner also made guest appearances on shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Sesame Street.

More recently, he played the role of AJ Austin in the medical drama The Resident. Warner's contributions to music earned him a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2015, along with more recognition for his 2023 spoken word album "Hiding In Plain View."

He was also committed to mental health discussions in the black community, launching the podcast "Not All Hood." Following his passing, celebrities and fans flooded social media with tributes. Basketball legend Magic Johnson shared how he felt a personal connection with Warner.

Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt honored his memory as an "incredible talent," while others, including Tracee Ellis Ross and Taraji P Henson, expressed their heartfelt condolences. Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock remembered Warner as a key part of many childhoods, highlighting the impact of his character Theo on a generation.

Warner's passing is a significant loss, not only for the entertainment industry but for many whose lives he brightened with his work and spirit.
