On July 22, Norway opened a new memorial to honor the 77 victims of the 2011 Breivik attacks, the country’s deadliest terror event in peacetime.
The artwork, titled "Upholding," displays a 12‑metre high stone mosaic of a small Utoeya island bird, framed in blue steel and surrounded by a reflection of straw and sticks—symbols of the victims’ community.
It sits near the Oslo bomb blast site and lists all 77 names engraved in stone, inviting visitors to remember and reflect on democratic resilience against far‑right ideologies.
Crown Prince Haakon and government officials attended the unveiling, and the ceremony was part of a broader national remembrance program at the new 22 July Centre.
This memorial, unveiled days before the attacks’ 15th anniversary, serves as both a tribute and a prompt for continued dialogue on intolerance and collective healing.
