BELEM, Brazil (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed frustration recently at the COP30 UN Climate Conference, lamenting the decision by eight senators, including Democrats, to side with Republicans to end the government shutdown. Newsom stated, I’m stunned that, in the face of the Trump phenomenon, we’re still using the same old political playbook. His criticism extended to the ease with which these senators agreed to compromise, suggesting that they seem out of touch with the seriousness of the current political landscape.

He remarked that the agreement reflects a dangerous complacency regarding Trump's influence on American politics, particularly as the country prepares for upcoming elections. Newsom’s comments come as criticism from within his party grows, particularly from those who believe such compromises with Republicans undermine the Democratic agenda.

Newsom emphasized his alarm for the future, saying, I'm much more alarmed about the future of our country and the world we’re trying to build than they are.
