In brief
Finnish police have seized a tanker linked to potential undersea sabotage amidst growing concerns over disruptions to vital cables connecting NATO countries.
The incident unfolded when Finland's national police boarded an oil tanker believed to be involved in the recent damage to undersea cables that play a crucial role in the country's infrastructure. The Estlink 2 submarine cable, which transmits electricity between Finland and Estonia, was severed on December 25, with reports indicating that damage to four additional data cables also occurred. These disruptions are being viewed as part of a broader pattern, raising alarms about a potential campaign from a so-called "Russian shadow fleet" intended to undermine NATO nations that have shown support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. In recent months, there have been multiple instances of undersea cables being cut, with Germany's defense minister recently denouncing an attack on two fiber-optic cables in the Baltic Sea.Finnish authorities are particularly attentive to the increased presence of Russian ships in the Baltic and North Seas, speculating that they may be part of an orchestrated effort to evade sanctions while carrying out acts of sabotage. The police have categorized these cable cuts as "aggravated vandalism" and have officially detained the Eagle S tanker, which was en route from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Port Said, Egypt, when it was intercepted in Finnish waters.
