In brief
He shared details of his ordeal after being discovered in a town near Damascus.
A man in Syria claims to be missing U.S. citizen Travis Timmerman, who entered the country on a Christian pilgrimage and was detained for several months. Found barefoot but relatively healthy near Damascus, Timmerman recounted being held alone in a cell and gaining freedom when someone broke down his door. Syrian authorities turned him over to rebel forces after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, leading to the release of many prisoners. Timmerman last contacted his family three weeks ago using a phone he smuggled in during his detention. His case had garnered attention after authorities in Missouri reported him missing earlier this year. He is now focused on finding a place to sleep while trying to navigate his new reality.
