In brief

The community faces uncertainty as they cling to traditions despite bleak circumstances.

As Christmas approaches, the Christian community in Gaza reflects on a difficult season. Ramez Souri, a local Christian, shared that the holiday holds little joy for him. Living in the ruins of St. Porphyrius, a Greek Orthodox church, he mourns the loss of his three children due to an Israeli airstrike. “This year, we will conduct our religious rites and that’s it,” he says. With churches like St. Porphyrius and the Holy Family Church serving as sanctuaries, many Christians are finding solace there amidst the destruction and violence. However, a sense of danger looms as the community may lose its 1,600-year-old presence in Gaza, as many seek to flee from the traumatic war.Kamel Ayyad, a church official who recently left for Egypt, admits uncertainty surrounds any return. “I love my homeland — we all do — but I won’t return immediately before assessing the political and economic situation.” For many, the immediate future remains unclear, but faith and hope persist even in dire times.
