In brief

With heightened border security, the ease of travel in Europe is facing significant challenges.

Germany has recently made headlines with its strict new border policies aimed at reducing migration. This move is a direct response to growing public concern over the influx of asylum seekers over the past decade. Travelers crossing from Poland to Germany recently experienced the new realities of border checks - delays and inspections that many now face regularly. As part of a broader European trend, neighboring countries like Austria and Poland are also reinstating their own border controls, which counters the long-held EU principle of free movement among its member states. The new procedures, introduced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government, have reportedly prevented an average of 110 migrants per day from entering Germany since May, up from 83 daily earlier this year.Countries are permitted to impose such controls during crisis situations, and the current focus on immigration has prompted several EU nations, including France and Italy, to take similar measures. As border checks grow tighter, the dream of seamless travel across Europe seems to be under threat.
