Oman and Iran put their heads together to keep the vital Strait of Hormuz open, while Tehran insists the waterway will stay shut unless the US meets certain demands. Iran’s foreign minister claims negotiations are near completion, but conditions include US compensation and lifting of naval blockades—risks that could keep shipping choked. The United States, too, has warned that the strait will remain closed unless diplomatic and military tools are used to secure worldwide trade. Oman has said talks with Iran over a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz are “positive”, but Tehran warns that the busy waterway won’t reopen until other conditions are met.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations are in the final stages, but highlighted a list of requirements, including US compensation for past incidents, removal of the naval blockade of Iranian ports and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

The U.S. response is mixed. President Trump floated the possibility of a quick deal, while Vice‑President Mike Vance signaled that more work is needed, noting the use of diplomatic, economic and military tools to secure the outcome.

The stakes have spiked with recent attacks on vessels. UAE officials reported an Iranian missile struck an Adnoc tanker, and the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency noted a projectile fired at a ship off Oman that caused a fire but no casualties.

With shipping in the region key to roughly a fifth of global oil flows, the tension remains high, and the situation continues to evolve as both sides navigate the diplomatic landscape.
