Three ex‑OpenAI researchers say they were fired for putting AI safety first, sparking a fire‑wars‑style debate over who gets to shape the industry’s future.
The trio – Nikita Balesni, Tomek Korbak and Jasmine Wang – wrote an open letter to the founders after their termination on 2 October. They argue the firings were retaliation for raising concerns that the company’s safety protocols were slipping away.
OpenAI, in a statement, said it had found a “significant breach of trust” after the researchers were accused of mishandling confidential data outside company procedures.
The conflict places AI safety advocacy under a spotlight. If businesses silence safety voices, the risk of runaway AI could increase while innovation stalls.
OpenAI has pledged to bring in third‑party safety assessors in the coming weeks, a move that could restore confidence in the company’s commitment to ethical AI.
