In brief

After a car‑firearm attack in the suburbs of Trappes and La Verrière, one person was killed and five injured, with victims appearing targeted for their migrant background. The national prosecutor ordered 48 hours of psychiatric observation for suspect Kevin T, 39. Macron branded the raid a racist terrorist attack, while new evidence uncovered books from bible to Mein Kampf at the suspect’s home.

A 39‑year‑old suspect, Kevin T, has been taken into psychiatric observation after a car‑gun attack in Trappes and La Verrière near Paris.

The attack left one man dead and five others injured. Victims appeared to be targeted for their migrant background, a claim that President Emmanuel Macron called a “racist terrorist attack.”

Under guidance from a psychiatric expert, Police and the National Anti‑Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) will keep Kevin T in observation for about 48 hours to determine whether he can be formally interrogated. He has drugs—cannabis and cocaine—in his bloodstream.

Investigators later found a Bible, a Quran and a copy of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf in the suspect’s home, indicating a possible ideological motive. The suspect, who previously held four convictions later expunged, is said to have used an old semi‑automatic gun during the shooting.

The only fatality, Pengo Bossio Wangi, 26, was a French‑Congolese martial artist hailing from the local mixed‑martial‑arts club. He is remembered by the club for his generosity and leadership.

A 12‑year‑old girl was critically injured, but the mayor of La Verrière reported that she is “doing better.” Three other injured residents are in varying stages of recovery.

Local authorities say the suspect was known to police but not to France’s intelligence services. The incident has sparked debate over the balance between public safety and mental health care in criminal investigations.
