At least three people were injured and buildings damaged after a 6.7‑magnitude earthquake hit the small settlement of Aniso in Peru’s southern Ayacucho region on Thursday.
The quake struck at 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) at a depth of 62 miles (100 km), about 19 miles (31 km) north‑west of Aniso in a remote part of the Andes. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the magnitude as 6.7, while Peru’s Geophysical Institute measured it at 7.2.
Peruvian Defence Minister Rafael Belaunde said that 22 homes, six schools and ten healthcare facilities in Ayacucho were damaged, and that services at those hospitals remained operational. Two schools in neighbouring Cusco also sustained damage. Municipal authorities confirmed that roughly 9,000 properties lost power and nine educational facilities were damaged.
Tremors were felt across large parts of the country, including Lima, 300 miles (482 km) from the epicentre. The incident follows a 7.4‑magnitude quake in Colombia that killed more than 300 people, and twin quakes in Venezuela which claimed over 6,000 lives.
