PITTSBURGH (AP) — Just under a month before the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was set to shut its doors, it unveiled a lifeline. The historic newspaper, rooted in the community since 1786, has found a buyer to keep the presses running.

The Post-Gazette's current owners, Block Communications, confirmed that the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism—known for their digital publication, the Baltimore Banner—will purchase the paper's assets, although financial details of the deal haven’t been revealed.

With the impending closure, which was scheduled for May 3, many locals were concerned about losing their only city-based paper, possibly leaving Pittsburgh as the largest U.S. city without one. But the new owners plan to maintain a schedule of printing on Thursdays and Sundays, while also providing online news access throughout the week.
